Blogging For News follows a code of ethics built on widely accepted digital-news standards, including the principles promoted by the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) Code of Ethics. This page explains, in our own words, the commitments we make to our readers. Referring to the DNPA code does not imply membership in, or endorsement by, that organization.
1. Accuracy and Truthfulness
- We report what we can verify and we do not invent, exaggerate or distort facts.
- We check names, numbers, dates and quotes before publishing.
- Headlines and images must fairly reflect the story beneath them. We do not use clickbait that misleads.
2. Independence and Impartiality
- We report without fear or favor, free from pressure by governments, political parties, advertisers or any interest group.
- We present relevant sides of a story and give people criticized in our reporting a fair chance to respond, where practical.
- Opinion and analysis are clearly separated from news.
3. Transparency and Attribution
- We name our sources whenever possible. Where a source must stay anonymous, we explain why and apply extra scrutiny.
- We credit other news organizations whose reporting we rely on, and we do not plagiarize.
- We label developing stories and state when information is unconfirmed.
4. Accountability and Corrections
We own our mistakes. Errors are corrected promptly and visibly under our Correction Policy, and readers can reach us at any time through Contact Us.
5. Minimizing Harm
- We weigh the public's right to know against the potential for harm, especially in stories about violence, accidents, abuse and grief.
- We avoid gratuitous graphic images and sensational language.
- We take special care with victims, survivors, families and vulnerable people.
- We do not publish content that promotes hatred or violence, or that targets people for their religion, ethnicity, gender, nationality, disability or beliefs.
6. Privacy and Dignity
- We respect personal privacy and intrude only where there is a clear public interest.
- We take extra care with children and do not identify minors involved in crime, abuse or legal proceedings.
- We do not identify survivors of sexual violence without their consent.
7. Fairness in Crime and Legal Reporting
- People accused of crimes are presumed innocent until proven guilty, and we report charges and allegations as such.
- We describe court proceedings accurately and report outcomes as well as accusations.
- Claims by security agencies, police or the state are reported as claims and attributed to their source.
8. Responsible Use of Images, Video and User Content
We verify user-generated content before using it, credit its source where known, and label file or illustrative images as such. We do not manipulate images to mislead.
9. Separation of Advertising and Editorial
Advertising never shapes our news coverage. Any sponsored or paid content will be clearly labeled as such and will never be presented as independent reporting.
10. Conflicts of Interest
Our contributors must disclose financial, political or personal interests that could affect their coverage. They may not accept gifts or payments in return for coverage.
11. Lawful and Respectful Conduct
We follow applicable laws, respect copyright, and treat sources, readers and colleagues with courtesy and honesty.
